Joseph Bouwman

(07/29/03) Good morning all,

My name is Joseph Bouwman and I am a Christian looking to use my personal

interest in Triathlons to help spread the Good News. I believe God put it on

my heart to use the passion of training and racing for a purpose other than

just self fulfillment.

I completed IMC in '91 and '92 and had a DNF in 1996. This last result left

a bad taste in my mouth but I could never find the energy to train again,

because I felt I was leading a self centered life. As I have become stronger

in my faith, I realize if I use my passions in a way that glorifies God, it

would be pleasing to HIM.

I have considered many ways in how to accomplish this and then ran across

the Iron Prayer website. My idea is as follows.

I live in Boise and will be trying to form a Christian Triathlete group. The

group will meet weekly or bi-weekly for prayers, bible study and training.

Our long rides/runs will include time to witness to others on route or on

break time. I would also like to set up a booth at a designated race site to

promote the idea of Christian Triathletes.

It would be great if I could form the club and then join with IronPrayer at

a race. I have not yet signed up for a 2004 IM but am contemplating either

IMC in Penticton or IMCda in Idaho.

I am Canadian so Penticton has appeal but I live in Idaho and would be

willing to do either race. The important thing is where there is most of a

need for HIM. The athletes in my club will be local of course. I will also

be setting up my own webpage.

What do you think? Could we work together?

God Bless

Josep

(08/05/03) (response to Joseph by Chad Hawker)

Hello Joseph!

Good to hear from you.  Sorry it took me a bit to get back to ya!  Thanks for your e-mail and

ministry ideas.  Very cool!

Sounds like you are doing a lot of searching with how God can use you in triathlons?  I

encourage you not to view triathlons as purely a selfish persuit.  There is such a ministry

field out there...as you may be realizing.  May you view tri's as a blessing; a gift from God to

explore the deepest most intimate places of your heart; treat it as a blessing from God for

the gift of health, passion and determination.  I think it gives God pleasure when we tackle a

seemingly impossible task and allow Him to give us the strength to overcome.  Yes, we

can get so focused that we lose proper perspective, but with constant prayer and gratitude

your focus can remain on Christ!  Then Christ has the ability to do some amazing things

through you!

Yes, even though I have not spoken directly with the other guys on the Iron prayer

committee...I am confident in saying that we would be delighted to help you in any way that

we can.  I would suggest you focus on Ironman Idaho...since your goal of a club is right

there in that state (not Canada).  If you have not heard from Bob Brubaker yet, I would

encourage you to talk with him about Ironman Idaho.  I know they have some very exciting

plans for 2004.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.  Take care and God bless!

(08/05/03) Hi again everyone,

Thank you all for your letters of encouragement.

In the past few days I have really had to focus on what God wants from me. I hesitated to

register, for the same reasons I have not done a race in 7 years, because of the focus on a

selfish pursuit. Your letters and my prayers showed me that does not have to be this way

and I have gone forward and listened to God's encouragement.

I have registered for the 2004 IM in Idaho and would really like to get involved in making Iron

Prayer a huge success. I will be creating my own Christian Triathlete club here in the

meantime so I hope and pray that God blesses this ministry.

Thanks again for your encouragement and I look forward to getting involved.

God Bless

Joseph

(07/22/03) Thanks to Bob Brubaker (USA) for this comment.

"FASCINATED WITH FRUSTRATION?"

He trained hard for the 2000 Ironman Triathlon World Championship and

it looked like it was going to be his year to make his mark. He had

traveled many miles in training and to race in qualifying events and now

while in Kona, HI it was time to acclimate to the area with some light

training. Everything seemed perfect for the race of his life. Then it

happened. Returning from a bike ride, he was hit by a car and

hospitalized. The training, the discipline, the traveling, and all the

preparation for what was going to be his year was over. How frustrating!

Lying in the hospital, Chad Hawker began to move from his frustration as

he began to be fascinated with the circumstance, asking God, "How

does this fit into your plan for me? How can I use this to honor you?"

From his accident and time in the hospital came the Iron Prayer concept,

offering athletes a gathering to worship, pray, and help them find added

strength in  taking the focus off themselves and focus on the source of

strength and power, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Iron Prayer ministry has

grown beyond the 2000 Ironman Triathlon World Championship to

triathlons around the world.

Frustrating moments are something we all face, from traffic jams, to

disappointments on the job, to family moments, and more. We all face

times of frustration. The Bible is clear about what our attitude should be

in times of frustration and disappointment. We are to recognize

frustrating moments as "faith building" sessions when we find added

strength by drawing close to God.

James 1:2-4 (The Message) Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests

and challenges come at you from all sides. [3] You know that under

pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors.

[4] So don't try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you

become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.

Romans 5:3-5 (NLT) We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and

trials, for we know that they are good for us-they help us learn to endure.

[4] And endurance develops strength of character in us, and character

strengthens our confident expectation of salvation. [5] And this

expectation will not disappoint us. For we know how dearly God loves us,

because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

Philippians 4:4-7 (NLT) Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again-

rejoice! [5] Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do.

Remember, the Lord is coming soon. [6] Don't worry about anything;

instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for

all he has done. [7] If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which

is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace

will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

That all seems good and right - but what can we do when we are really

annoyed? Instead of exploding and venting our frustration which will get

us nowhere, what if we, like Chad in his moment of disappointment, took

a step back and allowed ourselves to be fascinated by the frustration?

What if we began to ask questions in search of how God is using this

and what He wants from us?

God has promised to answer us when we ask. You can turn the

frustration of what appears to be negative into something positive by

asking the right questions.

Matthew 7:7-8 (NIV) Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;

knock and the door will be opened to you. [8] For everyone who asks

receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be

opened.

Remember, God is not out to ruin our lives and frustrate us. He has a

plan for us that even makes use of our frustrating moments.

Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) For I know the plans I have for you," declares the

Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope

and a future.

The more we look at times of frustration: the setbacks, the

disappointments, and the daily aggravations as something God can use,

the less we'll be filled with irritation and the better day we'll have, even

when things aren't going as planned.

If you want power in your life today, think about being fascinated when

frustration comes your way.

Godspeed,

Bob Brubaker

(01/13/03) Gentlemen,

I am not a tri-athlete yet (since I don't swim) I may be one day by the grace of God, but

currently I am beginning to participate in duathlons, beginning with the Black Water

Traverse Duathlon in Cambridge, Maryland on May 4th of this year.  I was wondering if you

could send me some details on how you organize your IRONPRAYER events.

As a Christian who is beginning to get involved in multi-sport events, your website has

caught my interest and I am wondering about how to promote an IRONPRAYER event at the

Blackwater race (I hope it wouldn't be a problem since its not a triathlon).  Since God has

graced me with the ability to participate in these events, I feel that I have the need to give

back to him in a meaningful way.  I had been feeling that my participation in the events

should bring glory to God, and I believe that this would be an ideal means of doing this.

Could you provide me with additional information on how you organize the IRONPRAYER

events, the best way to contact the race directors, and any other information that may be

beneficial.

It may be too late to organize an event for this year, but through Christ all things are

possible.

Can we arrange something for booth space? Maybe ads in future issues or

like to talk about space at Alcatraz, and possibly a slot there if possible,

Also, please think about how I can personally be more involved with Trinity

(03/02/04) Robin and Troy,

I somehow stumbled upon your website while searching about triathlons.  I am 20 years

old and am in my 3rd year of Tris.  I am a fellow believer and it was awsome to find some

triathletes who are on fire for the Lord.  That is deffinetly a inspiration and a motivator to

read what you guys wrote. Jesus does need to be there center of our lives.  Keep on

preaching the gospal and maybe ill see you at a race someday.

If you want to email me back or check out my website feel free.

Joe Gentry

(02/20/03) Troy (Soares),

My name is Joe Gentry and I am 19 years old.  I competed in my first triathlon last April,

and have been hooked ever since then.  I ended up competing in 6 tris last year and plan

on matching that this year, along with competing in my first half ironman.  Anyway I was just

looking around some different triathalon websites looking for articles on the VINEMAN and I

stumbled upon your story on how your race went.

When I got to the end and you were giving credit for your accomplishment to God and

thanking him for giving your strength, I thought that was awsome.  I dont know any christian

triathletes, so to read about one who professes his faith so profoundly was awsome to

see.  I myself came to know the lord at age 8, but really didnt have a relationship with the

lord.  I had lots of doubts wether I was a christian and wether I would go to heaven if I died.

So when I was 12 I renewed my life to christ, and I can tell you that if I died tonight I know I

would go to heaven.

Well just writing to say hi.  Maybe you could give me some triathalon tips.  The half IM I am

doing this year is the VINEMAN.  So maybe you could give me some tips on what to train for.

I am currently swimming 2-3 hrs a week, bikeing 60 miles a week, and running 15-20

miles.

ok look forward to hearing from you

My name is Safiye Guven. I stumbled across the Trinity Trialthle website as I was checking

add me to the e mail list.  Also, I would be interested in finding out how to contact other

Christian triathletes in my area (San Jose, CA)

who would be interested in training/praying together. I am very much a novice at this sport.

My first and only experience was Pacific Grove sprint last year (after losing 100 pounds) and

took almost 2 hours, but thanks to Gods grace I DID FINISH. I really enjoyed it. The Lord is

doing amazing things in my life and I would

like to continue and get better. Sorry if this is too wordy. I am just excited to find out that this

is a Christian organization. I tought so last year with all of the great music, but I didn't know.

Thanks...

(12/30/02) As  a college student, I had a wonderful opportunity to travel around the World as

a student aboard a floating university.

After coming home from being over  seas for a year, my girl friend asked me to marry her.

We moved to  Santa Rosa CA., where both my wife and I accepted Christ as our personal

Savior.

In 1981, our family started out for a 1,500 mile bike  trip.  (growing close to God comes

when there are trials in your  life.)  My daughter, Marie, saw her Mother killed on the bike.  My

wife's death was the beginning of seven family and friend who died in  1981.

I still cycle a great deal.

A little more than two years  ago, one of my living employees informed me,  "I am a

workaholic,  and  I had one foot in the grave."

In different times of my life, I  have done running, swimming and cycling.  I decided right

then and there,  why not do all three at one time.

At the end of my second season, I found  myself in Kona participating in the big WTC race

in the Physically Changed  division.

This year, I have a healthy racing schedule, including  Wildflower.

Paul tells us "run to win."

By the grace of  God, "I will see you at the finish line"

I compete in the 55 - 59 year  group.

The sport of triathlon has changed my life for the  good.  There have been so many blessed

people who have crossed my path in  the last year while preparing for Kona.

Go for the Gold, and share your  faith along the triathlon path.

Yours in Christ

(12/30/02) Too whom  it may concern,

Please add my name too your prayer list.  Also put  me on your chat list, and your housing

lists.

Thank  you,

(06/30/03) Hi Bob, Troy and Chad

Our church hosted the Iron Prayer here in Coeur d'Alene this past Friday.

What a cool event.  You guys have the potential to reach so many people.  I

would like to make the offer to you and your event organizers to host the

event again next year.  I would also want to make a better venue in our

facility available to you next year.  We had the event in our Fellowship

Hall this year due to facilities conflicts with our Vacation Bible School.

Next year, I would like to do everything possible to make our Auditorium

available to you.  We would also have our Worship Team available, as well as

healthy refreshments (you'll have to tell us what those include, and I'll

bet it's not donuts and coffee...).  We would also help to publicize the

event for you in the weeks preceding it.

OK... now I'm thinking out loud...  We might even be able to secure an

outside - more public - venue like a downtown park if your goal would be to

reach out to un-churched athletes who might be curious about what you guys

are about.  I guess it all depends on your purpose for the event...  In any

case we would love to assist.

Just let me know if we can help.

(05/22/03) WEll hello to all and sundry on this extended list,

Not long a go many of you received a change of address

e:mail about the whearabouts of the criminal gang

known as the laysons.  WE have stayed one step ahead

of the law long enough to put down some roots.  In

fact we have grafted another member into our Gang.

She is the cutest yet member of the wandering Laysons.

Little Katherine Rae Layson entered the world at

2.19pm on Thursday 22 May 2003.  She weighs a

substantial yet feminine 8 lbs 0 oz.  Attached are mug

shots of the new gang member.  If you do happen to see

her, be warned, apprach with caution as she is

extremely cute and likely to steal your heart.

Sal is well, if not a little sore in the you know

where, but enough of that.  She is the Sydney

Adventisit hospital till Monday, but don't tell the

cops.

>

> 2002 started with my arrival in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. I found

know (staying for the day, using our garage as their transition area,

Greetings in Christ,

This is a Trinity Triathletes update.

*               A Tragic Ironman Utah

Please pray for the family of 55yr old John Bolen.  He was an avid Ironman Triathlete that

died during the confusion of the swim.  Please pray for the rest of the athletes that

experienced such a scary and chaotic start to what was supposed to be their finest

moments.  Trinity Triathlete, Bob Brubaker, was also in the midst of the terrible conditions

and was among the many athletes that were lost in the stormy conditions that blew away all

markers and made rescue efforts difficult.  Surely most of the 1500 athletes are dealing

with a lot of emotions coming back from an unfortunate race that wasn't at all what they had

expected or hoped for.  But we know that our Heavenly Father is the ultimate rescuer and

the ultimately comforter.  May we also pray that many will turn towards Christ during this

time.  Even in misfortune a great beginning can result. (See IMU story at

(04/14/03) This isn't media worthy but nonetheless for me it was a neat thing.  I was

originally going to be signing up for the California Half in April ( I had

done it last year ).  But being a pastor at CalvaryChapelSouthBayI of course

was praying and asking the Lord what He wanted for me and what I was

supposed to do.  I kept checking the participants list on the web site but

still no peace about signing up.  I didn't like the fact that the race was a

month and a half earlier than last year and thought it would be too cold

etc.  Meanwhile some friends from church had told me that they were going to

be doing Wildflower.  They had signed up last year and got a spot before it

had sold out.  I decided to take a look at the web site for Wildflower but

of course it said it was all sold out.  I had shared with my friends that I

wasn't sure about the California Half and they began to tell me more about

Wildflower...that it was a great race, beautiful venue and also that the

race director Terry was a Christian and that he even prayed before the race

started!

Well I just kept praying and then I found out about the lottery for

Wildflower.  I decided that I would go ahead and enter the lottery and put

out a fleece so to speak.  If I got in then I would do Wildflower-if not I

would go for the California Half.  In this I had the peace I was seeking and

left it in the Lords hands.  Well needless to say when I got the e-mail

letting me know that I had gotten picked in the lottery I was pretty

excited.  I immediately knew that the Lord had opened the door and now I had

the go ahead.

Well true to the Lord and after looking back now on the California Half (I

went and watched my brother in law) God knew that during the month and a

half prior to the California Half (when I would have been doing my most

intense training)I would not have had the time nor desire to train and be

ready for the race. This was all due to my mother (who has terminal brain

cancer) having a stroke.  It was an intense time and I know now that is why

I had no peace to sign up for the California Half.

My mom is still not doing too well but things have calmed down. My training

is on track as much as it can be with being a pastor and I am looking

forward to being there on May the 3rd representing the Lord as I run in my

"Team Jesus" jersey.

I hope to meet Terry. I read in Competitor that what he does with the sport

of triathlon is his ministry and it is neat to know that there are other

believers in the sport.  It seems that there is not too much of a witness in

this sport so I feel that that is why God has given me the desire to

participate.  I knew when I got involved that I couldn't just run in these

races without being a witness myself so I designed a logo and have started a

tri club called "Team Jesus Triathlon Club" based upon Philippians 3:14...I

press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ

Jesus.  Now I can enjoy the sport knowing that as I bike and run the name of

Jesus is being displayed to others in the race.  Prayerfully it will

encourage other believers and also direct the lost to the Savior.

So that's my short story...see you there!

(02/24/04) Dear Terry,  I have repeatedly tried to get in touch with Troy Soars, but have never

heard back from him concerning my interest in supporting Trinity Triathletes.  I have

discussed with Stacee Johnson and she has forwarded messages but to no avail.  I first

discussed with you last fall after Alcatraz, but have not been able to hook up successfully.  I

will persist on trying to support this great ministry program of yours.  Maybe it's God who

wants to close this door, but I think it's someone else who wants to prevent me from

(05/05/03) Hi Terry.  I just completed Wildflower Triathlon, and I'm sure you are

busy

with after race details, but I wanted to send an Email to find out how I

can

looped into the Trinity Athletes. I started competing in triathlon two

years

ago, and am hooked, this year I've competed at Ralph's, Wildflower, and

am

doing Ironman Idaho in June.  I love the sport and the training, but

find

that I am spending a lot more time with triathlete friends as a result

of

the training requirements.  I am a Christian though, and want to

integrate

this with my faith.  Generally, I find that in my church and Bible

studies

my triathlon passion is misunderstood.  I think I would really benefit

from

the fellowship of fellow Christian triathletes.  The problem is that I

don't

know any here in Oregon.  When down at Wildflower I discovered the

Trinity

Triathletes, and wondered whether I could somehow get on the Email list

or

meet other folks who are committed to their faith and serious

triathletes.

Can you help?  Thanks,

Amanda Tucker

(Response from Terry..

Amanda

Glad to hear that you enjoyed our Christian event.  We are blessed to

have the opportunity to share our faith with thousands of triathletes.

I am glad that you are looking for other Christians to train with.  What

ever you do be sure to be bold with your faith.  There are more

Christians out there than you think, they just don't show it.  I

encourage you to lead the way in Oregon.)

(05/12/03) Thanks Terry.  I would be very pleased to lead the charge in Oregon, like I

said, I love the sport but most often the others with whom I train don't

share faith so I miss the fellowship.  I would like to have my Email posted

in the Trinity Triathletes website, and if there are fellowship

opportunities for triathletes, please let me know.  I do plan to do other of

your events in the future, hopefully Wildflower (and hopefully it won't

rain!).  Thanks for responding despite your busy schedule.

suggestion would be very appreciated.

Thank you

(04/11/03) Hi Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am emailing you because your email address is on the Trinity Triathletes email address

list and you live in California.  I too live in California and  am hoping to find fellow Christians

to run with.  God gave me a passion for Him and for running, and I am praying He will bring

me others who also share these passions. Maybe we could start Saturday runs in a

conveniently located place. Please email me if this sounds like something you would like to

 do.

(04/14/03) Thank you Chad.  Michelle Ridder has contacted me and told me her and Robin

run at a place I run at all the time.  Thank you again for the contacts.

God bless you.
