Terry Davis, founder and CEO of Tri-California Events has announced that the San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz scheduled for 2012 (July 8) and 2013 have been postponed due to the Americas Cup World Series, scheduled for 2012 and 2013 in San Francisco. “The Cities’ agreement with Americas Cup would not allow permitting until after the Americas Cup finalized their dates,” says Davis. All dates from July-October were blocked. We originally marked August 19, 2012 for The Alcatraz Tri, which directly conflicts with the Americas Cup races and activities. So we were put on hold until March of this year while their dates were finalized.” Davis continues: “We normally request our dates early in the fall, which allows our triathletes ample planning time. Many triathletes of this caliber make their racing and travel plans in December and January for their year.” Davis says. “In addition, there are only a few Sundays in any given year that allow safe navigation from Alcatraz to the Presidio or Marina Green where the event venue is located.
“With that combination of conflicts, the only acceptable date Tri-Cal and the City could settle on was July 8th. We tried in vain to make this date work but with 4th of July and other events in the city, this date proves to be un-suitable as well. Rather than wait and have our participants get any farther into their plans, we felt it was in everyone’s best interest to postpone the event until 2014. Next year will even be more difficult with the Louis Vuitton Cup scheduled for July 4 -September 1, and the Americas Cup final September 7-22.”
“We are a small fish in a big pond (bay) and understand that. And the City has worked hard to try and accommodate us. We have a good relationship with city staff, and understand their challenges.” Says Davis. “We hope our triathletes will take on one of our other events (Alcatraz Challenge) and enjoy waiting with anticipation the return of our classic Alcatraz Tri in 2014”.
Tri-California produces the Alcatraz Challenge Swim on May 28th and the Alcatraz Challenge Aquathlon on July 22nd this year. The swim will be from Alcatraz to East Beach in the Presidio and the Aquathlon includes a run across the Golden Gate Bridge and back to East Beach.
“I prayed about this and other tough decisions I’ve had to make this year. The answer I got was “wait”. I will do so patiently and excitedly to see what unfolds in the meantime.” Davis continues: ‘”The America’s Cup is one of the most prestigious events in the world, which is great for the city of SF. I’m not excited about postponing any event, especially after 15 years of race directing an Alcatraz Tri. But, I am pleased to have this great city host an event of this magnitude”.
