MONTEREY, CA (February 17, 2012) – Tri-California Events, today announced registration is now open for the 2012 San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz.
The International Distance Triathlon is set to begin Sunday, July 8, 2012 at 7:00 a.m. PST, where athletes will jump from a boat in the San Francisco Bay, positioned just off the shores of the island of Alcatraz (1.2 miles).
Following the swim, athletes will jump on their bikes to navigate the hills of San Francisco with sharp turns, fast descents, and climbs through the Presidio, Golden Gate Park and out to the Great Highway. The bike portion will last 25 miles, the longest triathlon in San Francisco.
With two-thirds of the race completed, triathletes will take in the scenery of the San Francisco Bay, and Golden Gate Bridge, as they run west for seven miles to Baker Beach. Here, they will encounter the famous 400 step “Sand Ladder,” before finishing on Marina Green.
“After months of negotiations with the City of San Francisco, awaiting final plans for the America’s Cup Sailing Race we have settled on a July 8 date,” said Terry Davis, CEO of Tri-California Events, and Race Director for the San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz. Davis adds, “The timing is perfect with the 4th of July holiday falling the Wednesday before the event. Families from across the US can make a mini-vacation out of the trip.”
Davis went on to explain that The City of San Francisco put all events taking place along the waterfront or San Francisco Bay on hold until the America’s Cup solidified plans. “There was a big waiting game,” said Davis. “All that matters is we have finally secured a date for 2012, and we are excited to offer our athletes the best possible race experience. “
Registration for the 2012 San Francisco Triathlon at Alcatraz is open to all participants and does not require entering a lottery or qualifying to claim a spot. For more information, or to register, please visit http://www.tricalifornia.com/
