LAKE LOPEZ, California -- Jason Jablonski, a 37-year-old who has the 2005 XTERRA age group overall men's world championship victory in his resume, blew away the Scott Tinley's Adventures Off Road Extreme men's field with a race-best split on the hilly, challenging bike and cinched the title with a second-best 10k run Sunday.
The women's field was dominated by youth as Shayna Powless, a 16-year-old track star at Roseville High School, blitzed the bike and aced the run to take a 15:59 margin of victory over 15-year-old Hannah Finchamp of Altadena, California.
"This race was a lot of fun," said Jablonski of the scenic bike course which featured 2,000 feet of climbing on trails winding around Lake Lopez near San Luis Obispo. Jablonski, a therapist in charge of biomechanical assessment at a physical training facility at home in Wenatchee, Washington, said "It's the kind of course where you go as fast as you can and if you can see straight, you're not going hard enough."
Jablonski started the day with a second-best 12:20 split for a half mile swim in Lake Lopez, which put him three seconds behind 57-year-old John Royson of Albany, California, and 30 seconds ahead of the eventual runner-up George Mainas, 23, of Greenbrae, California. Jablonski then put the hammer down with his world-class mountain biking skills, posting a 1:14:57 time for the 17.1 mile bike -- 7:12 faster than Mainas.
"This was definitely a challenging race," said Mainas, a swim coach in Oakland, California whose best triathlon result has been a win at the Mountain Man Challenge in Oahu. "Some of the uphills here were tough - I had to get off the bike and push a couple of times. But that's why we came here - for a challenge."
Jablonski upped his final margin to 10:44 with a second-best 39:14 on the hilly but largely paved 10k run, a time which bested Mainas' by 2:54. Mark Budgeon, 27, of Bossier City, Louisiana, posted the fastest run of 35:43 on his way to a 12th place finish.
Hannah Finchamp burst out of the water with the first overall time - 12:06 - and up the first steep off road hill on the bike wheel to wheel with eventual men's winner Jayson Jablonski. Jablonski offered his congratulations -- "You are doing great," he told the Altadena youngest as they crested the first hill together.
But Shayna Powless soon made up her 68-second deficit from the swim with a superb 1:32:23 bike which was 7th fastest overall including the men's field, while Finchamp mustered a woman's second-best 1:46:08 split. Powless solidified her victory with a women's best 48:00 10k run3:16 better than Finchamp and 3:18 better than third-place woman Sloane Pelligrin, 28, of Santa Barbara.
At the finish, Powless's 2:35:55 finish was 8th best including all the men, 15:59 ahead of Finchamp and 19:22 ahead of Pelligrin.
"I really enjoyed this course," said Powless, who was cheered on by her father. "It's beautiful and I like the hills."
