We have posted the most common questions received in our office for your convenience.  Please read these over prior to e-mailing or contacting us, your question is likely related to one of the answers below. VOLUNTEERS

Q. I have family coming that would like to volunteer where you need help.  How can they get involved?

A. Volunteers are able to get involved with the race while having fun watching family and friends. Volunteer information is coming soon.

*NOTE - Cal Poly volunteers must register through an Organization Recruiting Rep (beginning in Feb.) or contact volunteermanagement@wfcommittee.com


REGISTRATION

Q. Is your credit card site secure?

A. Yes

Q: My race day age is wrong. Example: I'll be 30 on race day. My birthday is 9/6/78, but the participant link says I will be 31. Why is that?

A. USAT calculates your race day age, based on the age you will be on 12/31/08. For complete USAT information, please reference http://www.usatriathlon.org/Events/Rules.aspx

Q. What do I need for Registration/Packet Pick Up?

A. Prior to race weekend, verify that your registration information is correct on the Participants Lists (follow the link on the left side of the screen). You must bring a photo ID to packet pick up. (If you are a USAT member, you must bring your current USAT card). Each participant must pick up his/her own race packet. Friends/Family cannot pick up race packets for each other. 

*Each member of relay teams must pick up his/her race packet. One relay member cannot pick up all of the packets for the entire team.

Q. How do I register a relay team?

A. On the applications page follow the link to the Relay Team Application. All three legs of the relay must register individually with the same Team Name. (If one person is doing two legs of the relay they must sign up twice) All three applications for the relay team must be submitted on-line at least one month prior to race day or all applications will be canceled.

Q. How do I register as a collegiate team member?

A. All details pertaining to Collegiate Competition are clearly described on our web site.

Q. Will I receive a confirmation packet?

A. No. All confirmations will be sent via e-mail. Until you receive your confirmation e-mail you can check the web site for the information.

Q. Were can I find wave start information?

A. Wave start information is posted within a few weeks of each event on our website. 

Q. Do you give discounts for youth participants?

A. Yes, there is an automatic 50% discount for participants under 18 years of age. If it is a youth only event the fee is pre-calculated.

Q. How many participants will Tri-California be allowing in the various Avia Wildflower Triathlon events?

A. Capacity numbers for the events are as follows:

Professionals: 100

Long Course: 3,000

Olympic: Individual age group – 3,500

Collegiate: 500

Relay Teams: 200

Mountain Bike: 1,200

Q. Do you allow race day registration?

A. No, these events typically sell out months before race day.

Q. Are there any benefits to registering early?

A. Definitely, there is a fee increase as the race dates approach. In addition, our events all sell out quickly on-line, so please register early.

Q. May I register my friend on-line with my credit card?

A. No, each person must register on-line for themselves.  They may register using your credit card number and expiration date with your approval.  The reason is that the waiver must be read and agreed to by the participant. An email confirmation will be sent to the email address typed in, as soon as you finalize the transaction. Keep a copy for your records.

Q. After registering for your event, I find I cannot participate. What are my options?

A. Please visit our Event Policies page for more information.

Q. May I give or sell my slot to someone else?

A. All entries are non-transferable. Tri-California allows for a certain rate of attrition at each event. If an applicant would like to make a change before the deadline, this refers to switching their entry from one distance to another within an event (if there are still slots available in each race), they may do so, keeping in mind that a processing fee will be included in that decision. The processing fee to perform a switch from one distance to another within the same event is $20.00. Thank you for respecting our policy. Participants found racing under another persons name will be disqualified and both entrants will be reported to USA Triathlon for disciplinary action which can include being suspended from any USAT event for 1 year.

Q. Are you accepting phone registration?

A. No.  All confirmations of your data as well as race updates will be sent to the on-line e-mail you provide while registering.


RACE SPECIFIC

Q. Can I ship my bike?

A. Yes, Local bike shop K-Man Cycle & Run will accept delivery and build bikes at the Lake. Click here for details on how bike shipping works. Be sure to email your tracking number to K-Man Cycle and Run so they can be on the lookout for your bike.

Q. When/Where can I rack my bike?

A. Bicycles must be racked at the assigned space (number) associated with your bib number race morning. Bicycles may NOT be racked in the transition area over night.

Q. Where do all of the race numbers go?

A. At registration you will receive several race numbers, bike ties and safety pins. There are no numbers or tags for the swim portion of the event. The bike number is secured to your bike frame using bike ties (road bike numbers must be visible from the sides, mountain bike numbers must be visible from the front). Helmet stickers should be placed accordingly: 1 sticker - front of the helmet, 2 stickers- front and back of helmet, 3 stickers- front, back and side of helmet. Bib numbers should be worn on the front of the body during the run portion of the event. 

Q.  How do I use my ChampionChip timing chip?

A. At registration, all participants will receive a white 6 x 9 envelope with a small black timing chip inside. Interlace the timing chip on a black Velcro ankle strap (either inside the envelop or pick one up at chip verification) and securely fastened the Velcro ankle strap AND timing chip to your left ankle. Participants' times will be recorded as you cross the red mats at each timing location: Swim In, Bike Out, Bike In, Run Out and the Finish Line. Chips and Ankle straps will be collected by volunteers at the finish line.

Q. What product will be on-course so that I can start training on it now?

A. The official energy bar sponsor is PowerBar, the official gel sponsor is PowerGel, and the official energy drink is Gatorade Endurance. Earthwater is the official Avia Wildflower Triathlons water sponsor. Each company has a web site you can link to from our home page of the AVIA Wildflower Triathlons, simply click their logo to learn more about their products.

Q. How do relay teams compete?

A. A relay team must consist of at least two members (one person cannot compete in all three legs of a relay). All relay team members must check in at registration to pick up their race packet. (Relay members cannot pick up race packets for their teammates) A relay team will be assigned one bib number: the swimmer will pick up the swim cap and timing chip, the biker will pick up the bike number and helmet stickers and the runner will pick up the bib number. Relay teams will transfer the timing chip and ankle strap by their assigned bike rack. (The timing chip is the "baton") All three relay members will receive a finisher medal. 

Q. What are the course cut off times?

A. Course cut off times are calculated after the start of the last wave for participants safety. The cut off times are posted below:

Long Course Cut Off Times:

Swim: 10:30 AM (1:05 after the start of the last wave)

Bike: 2:45 PM (5:20 after the start of the last wave)

Run: 5:45 PM (8:20 after the start of the last wave)

 

 

Mountain Bike Course Cut Off Times:

 

There are no course closure times for the Mountain Bike event.

 

Olympic Cut Off Times:

Swim: 12:15PM (1:20 after the start of the Last Individual Age Group wave)
Bike: 2:45 PM (3:50 after the start of the Last Individual Age Group wave)
Run: 4:15 PM (5:20 after the start of the Last Individual Age Group wave) 
Q. Is Wildflower a USAT sanctioned event?

A. Yes

Q. What are the distances for the AVIA Wildflower events?

A. Long Course: 1.2 mi. Swim, 56 mi.Bike,13.1 mi. Run.

    Olympic Course: 1.5k Swim, 40k Bike, 10k Run.
    Mountain Bike: 0.25mi.Swim, 9.7mi. Bike, 2mi. Run.

   

Q. What is the water temperature of Lake San Antonio?

A. Between 65 and 68 degrees.

Q. Are wet suits allowed?

A. Yes, full and sleeveless wet suits are allowed, but not required. Booties and squid lids are also ok.  The official wet suit sponsor is 2XU.  See our website and athlete newsletters for rental and purchase specials. 


SPECTATORS

Q. Where can I watch race morning?

A. The AVIA Wildflower Triathlons are exciting events to watch.  The transition area is a restricted area and only participants will be allowed, however there are many spectator friendly viewing areas for each leg of the event.  During the race you can also enjoy the Exposition areas which are open throughout the day and is free to the public.

Swim - Don't miss the start with the colorful waves of participant swim caps and inflatable arch at the main launch ramp.  Watch from the grass area above the swim or along the shoreline
Bike - Cyclists will exit the transition area through the finish chute on Saturday and up Lynch hill on Sunday. All participants can be seen racing at the intersection on top of Lynch hill or as they enter and exit the transition area at the bottom of Lynch Hill.
Run - All runners exit south toward beach city on the trail below the general store lawn and will loop around to the finish chute.  The expo area is a great place to watch.

Finish - Come cheer on all the finishers from the grand stands!  

Q. Are there are any fees to watch the Triathlon?

A. All visitors to the event must pay a festival fee of $12 per person ($10 if ordered in advance on-line or free with camping pass) which is good for the entire time that they are in the park.  Children under 12 are free.  All drivers of vehicles coming into the park must purchase a day-use vehicle pass if they are just spending the day or a camping vehicle pass/per night if the vehicle is going to be in the park overnight.  Registered Triathletes receive a free festival entry for themselves and a free day-use vehicle pass for the day that they are competing.  All other persons in the vehicle must pay the festival fee.  If a person purchases a Camping vehicle pass for their vehicle (car, motor home, or vehicle towing a trailer) in advance on line, along with their camping pass all the persons in that vehicle receive free festival entry. (see accommodations link).  If they purchase a camping vehicle pass when they arrive all the persons in the vehicle must pay a festival fee.

Q. Is there food available on site?

A. Yes, several food vendors will be available in the expo area selling a variety of fares: burritos, tri-tip, pasta, crepes, smoothies, coffee, etc... 

Q. Can I bring my pet?

A. No. Due to past accidents, we have chosen to prohibit dogs in the festival area and therefore suggest you leave the pets with a house sitter or a friend. The no pet policy will be strictly enforced by the Monterey Parks Department.

Q. Can I purchase an event souvenir?

A. Yes, Official event merchandise will be available at the Tri-California Merchandise Tent or Click Here for our on-line store. The latest in triathlon gear and apparel is also available from Tri-California and other vendors. 

Q. Are there any road closures I should be aware of?

A. Yes. Saturday and Sunday the bicycle course's enter and exit the park on the main roads.  Lynch Road and Lake San Antonio Drive (in the park) will be CLOSED on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30AM to 3:00PM or until the last bike returns to the transition area. (Roads outside the park on the bicycle course will be controlled by the California Highway Patrol) All participants and spectators should plan on arriving before 7:30AM (beware of long lines at the front gate) and staying at the lake until 4:00PM.


PARKING

Q. Will there be specific parking or shuttles available?

A. Yes. Signs are posted and volunteers will be directing traffic and parking Friday through Sunday. Shuttles will run through the days from parking areas to the festival area.


GENERAL

 

Q. Where is Lake San Antonio?

A. Check our web site Directions Link for a map, directions, and all accommodation information.

Q.  Can I use my own ChampionChip?

A. Yes. During the on-line application process there is a place to enter you own alpha-numeric chip code. (Please do not enter any spaces or dashes). You may also email your own chip code to timing@tricalifornia.com .  Please bring your personal ChampionChip with you to packet pick up.

Q.  What do I do with my ChampionChip if it is not returned at the finish line?

A. There is a $30 fee for all chips not collected within 30 days. Please mail your ChampionChip in a padded envelope to the address below:

Q. Where do I pick up my pasta tickets (ordered with your on-line application)?

A. There will be a list at the Expo Area Pasta Pavilion above the main stage area of all pre-paid dinners for Friday and Saturday night.

Q. Where can I get past merchandise and race t-shirts?

A. Tri-California Events' on-line store is on the web! A link is on the bottom of the Tri-California home page or simply Click Here. 

Q. Where can I go for camping? 

A. Pre-paid and pre-registered camping is available on-line with your registration. Additional camping is also available from the front gate at Lake San Antonio, remember to arrive early as camping spaces are limited.
